Apparently, some people like to drive to scantily-populated areas to watch pieces of stellar trash streak across the sunless skies. By “some people,” I mean me and probably most of MITs Society of Physics Students. Thanks to Sara 10s vice presidencing skillz, MIT SPS borrowed a van and shipped three vehicle-loads of meteor semi-enthusiasts to Wallace Observatory on the first night last week when the sky was visibly raining meteors instead of, well, rain. So I grabbed an extra-heavy blanket, an extra-bright flashlight, an extra-warm sweatshirt, and an extra-small Jess Lin and headed over to the Green Building to await Saras glorious borrowed van. Jess Lin was the ideal last-minute person to bring along because (1) Jess Lin and I could probably share a car seat if x y, where x is the number of people signed up for the trip and y is the legal passenger capacity of the van, and (2) Jess Lins family lives about 10 minutes away from Wallace Observatory, so if we got stranded in the middle of the woods, Jess Lins mom could hypothetically drive to Wallace and bring us take-out Thai food . Saras arrival was timelike separated from mine, so I entertained myself by toying with 15-second exposure times on my camera, whose maximum exposure has no timelike separation from 15 seconds, unfortunately. That and my spacelike separation from a tripod precluded the possibility of magazine-worthy meteor shots, I soon discovered. (Low-angle shot of the Green Building.) After a while, it was clear that Sara was going to be non-relativistically late, so I started shooting the breeze with Jess and shooting the cement with my camera. Thats not a figure of speech, by the way; I ended up with some excellent macros of the cement outside the Green Building. Seriously. At last, the prophesized van showed up. Inward we piled. Wallace-ward we drove. 40 minutes it took. Wallace was cold and dark and starry. After a short tour of the telescopes, we spread our blankets on the driveway and sprawled on our backs, eyes hungering for light. Residual splatterings of starlight slowly intensified from pinpricks into lush necklaces of hot glowing jewels on black velvet. I switched on my camera, upped the exposure to 15 seconds, and set the focus to infinity. 15 seconds later, I had a fantastic, high-quality picture of an empty black rectangle on my storage card. This was the best photo of the night. This was the second-best photo of the night. In two hours, I saw three meteors. Thats infinitely more meteors per hour than the average over my life prior to August 13, 2009! (The secret to avoiding disappointment is to recalibrate your perspective using irrelevant statistics. Another example: I broke my right arm. Thats infinitely better than being one of the 0.0003% of people in the world who go to Harvard!*) *Actually, Im pretty sure this statement is comforting not because of the statistic but because it makes fun of people at Harvard. If youre still disappointed, never fear: the moral of this story is that hope and determination always prevail in the end. After a night of abortive attempts, I was rewarded with: Meteors galore! Just kidding. The moral of the story is that if celestial bodies wont move for you, you can at least move your camera to create cheap blur effects that look like meteor tails, because nobody reading your blog can tell the difference anyway. Ethical Dilemma In Architecture And Engineering - Free Essay Example

To what extent should efficiency be prioritized over the potential risk of human life when building a structure? Everyday each person goes inside a building whether it be your house, for your job, school, grocery shopping, eating, or even working out, and each year these structures collapse due to construction efficiency. 58% of multistory failures were due to construction problems and with no warning that the building is unsafe. In the structural engineering field one issue is that the structural engineers have a dead line to meet and a money budget and the engineer might not go to the engineering manager to get the math checked. These engineers go ahead with building a structure not thinking about the later consequences and the safety risk of a failing structures and harming lives. The ethical dilemma within this is that construction need to occur at specific rate while safety could be jeopardized, this is putting money or efficiency over life. This then leads to the question: to what extent should efficiency be prioritized over the potential risk of human life when building a structure? The Importance of Following Protocol Rules and procedures are put into place for a reason and these should never be broken even if itll cost more money or push a deadline back farther. Each engineer has and should follow the engineers code of ethics. The very first code article Fundamental Canon section one states, hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public(NSPE). This code is being violated many times because the engineers move head with build the structure without verification to move ahead which then puts the engineers life and others life in danger. Engineer companies have liabilities and deal with failing structures differently and how the consequences are dealt with. Most of these liabilities are put in place after a building fails not before or when building the structure. The communities affected by this issue are the structural engineers, construction workers, business people, families, and the people using the unsafe building. Consumer and Society Perspectives The biggest concern of a failing building is who is harmed and if there were any deaths. The families of person that died normal blame the death on the designers and construction works and want to receive money for the life they lost. The big question then begins to rise; what is the money value of life? Each life is different and theres not a specific number so this is hard to answer in court and the money value that the family wants isnt always what they receive. In terms of why an engineer would skip being checked is that if that is the lives of others being killed is less than the cost of the building then it would be alright is the building might fail. The consumers of these building want to be in the building by a certain to make money faster or be in their house to spend less money. These engineers feel the pressure to meet these deadlines problems begin to take over and some are out of the engineers control. If the material that was sent is wrong and to get the right material cost more money and would put the building time back the engineers might use the delivered material to not waste material and spend more money without getting approved. Going back to the value of life, if someone dies due to a failing building how old they are and where the building is might refine the value. Life expectancy in each country is different meaning the value of life in each country would be different. Andorra has the highest expected life span being 82.5 years and their value will be on the higher end of value of life. In the Central African Republic, the life expectancy is only 44.5 years giving them a lower value of life (Life Expectancy). In the United States the expected lifespan is 78.75 years, back in 2012 the money value of life was but as $7 million to $9 million dollars. In 2011, the Environmental Protection Agency placed the money value at $9.1 million (Partnoy). There is an issue of setting money values onto life because it is an ethical dilemma on its own, as each agency comes up with a different number and it depends on the situation. It has been predicted that the minimum value of life of one year is $129,000. Once this is decided determining what to pay the family becomes tricky as do you pay for the life they have spent, to total value of thier life, or the part of life that they didnt experience because of their death. Ways to help determine who was in the wrong, why they did it, and much needs to be paid is the natural law theory and deontology. Natural Law Approach The Natural Law theory is the theory that God gave everyone natural reasoning to make ethical decisions. The law also states that live is above all importance and dont put lives in danger. This is the side the consumer and family would take as they see the collapsed building as the engineers put others lives in harm. When proceeding to build a structure without verification the engineer put lives in danger and that disobeys the natural law theory meaning the engineer was in the wrong. The limitations of this approach are that it shows the view of the victims so that it uses bias to get the most amount of benefit out of a court charge, and it uses religion and not every area around the world believe all in the same theory. Deontology Approach The deontology is when there is a relationship between ethical decisions or morality actions and duty. This means what someone did was because they that it was right and did it because it was the right thing to do. As the engineer this is the theory that they would side on. When the engineer continues to build, they arent thinking of the people they might kill because it is not a for sure situation, rather they think of it as saving money for the company by using the cheaper material and not sending back the wrong material, as well as meeting the deadlines for the business to continue the work process. After the action failed then the engineer will pay for the consequences as they did what they thought was right but failed and still are admitting their wrong doing, they arent denying that overlooking the material was not a mistake. Based off a study from 1977-2000 buildings are 30-52 percent more likely to collapse doing service not during construction, this has been increasing over time (Hadipriono, Wardhana). What this means is the engineers see nearly no danger during the time of construction, so they think they did the right thing by being more efficient. Evaluation Reconsider if efficiency should be prioritized over the potential risk of human life when building a structure, the natural law theory shows that life should be saved and not put at ask while the deontology theory states that doing what is right is the right action to take. When deciding the value of the life that was lost deontology should be used because the engineer might be at fault, but they were doing what they thought was the right thing to do at the time, they were not thinking of killing people. To avoid this ethical dilemma more laws should be put in place to prevent any construction to begin without verification from a superior. This solution will make the building process slower but to make sure the construction worker, and the consumers are safe more restrictions should be enforced. For my adaptation I chose to write a speech criticizing a modern court case basing my writing off the work of the famous orator Cicero. I wrote as if I was part of the infamous court case about the shooting of Trayvon Martin; in the case I represent the late Trayvon martin and cross examine the defendant George Zimmerman. In this case a mixed race, hispanic man, named George Zimmerman encountered Trayvon Martin, a young African American teenager, walking home from a 7-11 in through the neighborhood Zimmerman was patrolling as a night watchman. Zimmerman saw Trayvon Martin and followed him in his car because he thought he looked suspicious so Trayvon began to run so George chased after him and then got out of his car and had a physical altercation with the teen. However Trayvon escaped Zimmerman temporarily and was running for his life when Zimmerman shot him with his handgun and killed the boy in his neighborhood. I thought that this case would be a very interesting one to analyze wi th Cicero’s writing because the case is much bigger than the individual shooting. The Preamble to the United States Constitution was written in 1787 but then ratified in 1788. James Madison helped shape the Constitution and Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. The Preamble contains important phrases to help better understand our United States Constitution. When the Framers coin the phrase, â€Å"secure the blessings of liberty†, it means that citizens of the United States of America have freedoms that cannot be taken away by anyone and it limits the power of the United States government to ensure us â€Å"We the People†, of these freedoms. Bright Shining Lie A Bright Lie Shining: John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam Neil Sheehan has used this novel to tell the story of the Vietnam conflict utilizing the perspective of one of its most respected characters. This is the story of John P. Vann who first came to Vietnam as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army and later returned as a civilian official. It is the story of his life from the beginning to the end. It is also Vietnam's story; it offers clear reasons for the conflict, and why it was such a disaster for all those involved. Vann arrived in Vietnam on March 23, 1962 as part of the new U.S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam. He became a chief advisor to an ARVN infantry division. His duty was to advise his Vietnamese counter part, but he officially had no power over any ARVN troops. It was this situation that became a major point of conflict between him and those who were running the war. During his first stay in Vietnam, Vann came to the conclusion that the U.S. could not win the war the way it was being fought. He decided to try and change the way things were. He gathered data and submitted detailed reports to those in charge of the actual conditions and state of the war. However, those above him either ignored the reports or destroyed them, because they could not believe that anyone could stand up to the might of the U.S. Reports that were sent to Washington were often dressed up to make things appear better than they were. No deliberated plan to misinform the government was ever uncovered, the generals simply believed that eventually things would go their way and they didn't want to alarm anyone. Vann learned of this practice and decided to start using the press to get his ideas out, in hopes that someone would listen and fix the problems. People listened, but high-ranking officials repeated denied his claims and informed the President that he had nothing to worry about everything was going fine. Vann left Vietnam and retired because there was little chance of advancement for him. Almost two years after he left Vietnam he once again returned, but in a civilian role. He was to help with the pacification programs that were developed to reduce the Viet Cong's presence in South Vietnam. Once again the problems with the way the U.S. was fighting became clear to him. This time he was in a little bit better of a position to change things. He had spent his years away from Vietnam developing his connections and reputation. However no real action was taken until 1968, after the Tet Offensive showed just how ineffective the war of attrition was. When Nixion took office he was looking for new ideas. John's ideas were looked at, and partially adopted. He called for the U.S. to take complete control of South Vietnam in order to make ARVN troops more effective. This idea was doomed to fail however, because most people viewed that step as to close to colonialism. So once again his ideas were ignored. John Vann died on June 6, 1972 in a helicopter crash while in Vietnam. This was just a general overview on how the book addresses Vann's role in Vietnam. Neil Sheehan was a reporter during the war, and like many other people came to believe Vann was the only person with his head screwed on straight. The reporters who knew him often described him as their bible because of his understanding of the situation. This above all is a work of history, it covers Vann's childhood, the Korean War, World War II, and even a little bit of World War I. Sheehan uses the information from all these sources to clearly spell out why things occurred and the reasons why people behaved the way they did. The sheer volume of information contained in this novel is astonishing. I found it difficult to absorb and analyze all of the information.
